Hope not.
The pre-op visit with the surgeon yesterday was quick and relatively easy, until the doc tried to show us Jai Li's palate! She screamed and fought. He tried to take a closer look at the gap in her gumline, which worries me as much as the palate. He couldn't really give us any concrete answers; he's got to get in there and see what's going on without her kicking and screaming. She's got such a tiny mouth. The gap is not as severe as we thought, but the palate is certainly wide open…. Until tomorrow morning, that is at 8:30am when he performs the soft palate closure. He may close the gap in her gumline if there's enough tissue to do so, and if the other procedures go quickly, he may work on her collapsed nostril. Even that doesn't look as bad as we originally thought. She can breathe out of that side, and it sure runs when she gets the sniffles.
She'll be on a liquid/soft food diet for a week or so, which will be great fun for a kid that eats 2 waffles or 2 servings of oatmeal every morning, along with half a dozen strawberries, half a banana, a date or two, toast and a Clementine if they're around. And a grown-up sized serving of yogurt. Every meal is like that! Amazingly, she's losing her baby fat and slender. She is strong, too – strong as an ox! (She was born in the year of the ox, if you don't recall.)
Being so strong, it's probably mommy that will need to be sedated, not Jai Li. We expect her to recover quickly. She whimpered and hugged mommy tight after the palate inspection yesterday, but it only lasted a few moments. She was turned around waving at the surgeon with big smiles just minutes later.
Thank you so much to all our friends with your prayers and help. Thank you, Nana Kiki for watching Heidi. I'm sure she'll be sad while Jai Li is out of the house. They're the best of friends!
Hopefully, we can get online from the hospital and update the blog tomorrow
